Fells Point Tax Revolt Leads Baltimore Police to “Flood the Zone.”

Thirty-seven Baltimore businesses threatened a taxpayer revolt unless the city provided sufficient police protection to the Fells Points community. Counter-protestors threatened to boycott these same businesses unless they paid taxes. The politics of police protection in Baltimore is the topic of this podcast.

               It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.  After the show was recorded on Sunday morning, June 13, 2021, and Clarke Ahlers specifically referred to the fact that there was no Baltimore Sun article on trouble in Fells Point, this article appeared.  The bottom line is that even an overwhelming police presence in Fells Point did not prevent at least one firearm incident.

               In the Fells Point episode, Serge Antonin describes laws that made it a crime to teach African-Americans to read. Serge asserts, and Clarke agrees, that this historical fact is evidence that the criminal justice system was used to perpetuate a permanent underclass status, even for freed slaves. This historical fact is the greatest and most important take-away from this episode.
